Click here to apply for the 26-27 school year at Boulder Universal.
Follow the above link and click the button- "Choice Enrollment Application" or "Apply"
You will be directed to the registration website, Schoolmint (https://bvsd.schoolmint.com/login) where the parent/guardian will need to create a new account or sign in to your existing account. Once logged in, click on "Get Started" button next to Add a Student. (For current BVSD students, the student ID number is needed to proceed and this will automatically pull in all of the student's information. For students new to BVSD or outside the district, click "No" button and you will be directed to input the student's information.)
The BVSD enrollment office will send an email regarding the application status. Notification of Acceptance and/or Wait list position will be sent around the end of January for all on-time applications.
Once enrollment has been confirmed, Boulder Universal will contact you to schedule an appointment with our staff.

Note: Choice Enrollment Process is a lottery process and is not first-come first-served. The Choice Enrollment Process/Application is separate and different from the neighborhood enrollment application system.

Boulder Universal (BU) is an online school that does not have a designated attendance area within BVSD. Boulder Universal welcomes and accepts students from all over Colorado!

Notes About Withdrawing From BU Mid-year:

If you are withdrawing your student from Boulder Universal mid-year to return to their neighborhood school, an Administrative Transfer (AT) request form must be submitted. Please be sure to work the BU Registrar to begin the withdrawal process.

Below are details of how the BU enrollment process tends to unfold in the course of a school year. These are important factors to consider for Boulder Universal enrollment:

The best way to ensure a spot at Boulder Universal is to fill out a Choice Enrollment request. View the process and online application link on the BVSD Enrollment Website. All other requests or methods are not guaranteed and are limited to space availability.
Changing BVSD schools, regardless if it is through Choice Enrollment or Administrative Transfer (AT) is a permanent change in your student’s enrollment. The seat at the student's previous school is surrendered and a request to return to another BVSD school must go through the Choice Enrollment or AT process.
Counselors meet with every student prior to enrollment in order to help students understand what it is like to transition from brick and mortar to an asynchronous online learning environment/setting. Parents/guardians are allowed to late decline after this meeting in accordance with JECC-R Policy (JECC-R).
Boulder Universal is NOT an alternative school. We have the same expectation, rigor, and graduation requirements as all BVSD schools.
High School students at BU can take FRCC courses, but enrollment in AP classes are unlikely.
BU online courses are fun, interactive and involve many of the same technologies students already use outside of school.
BU stays connected with its students by utilizing Google products and Schoology’s learning management system (LMS) providing asynchronous, online academic content. This technology allows us to offer another route to academic success for students whose individual needs make attendance at a traditional school challenging.
Although the coursework is delivered via the Internet, students engage and interact with an actual teacher and other students in a virtual setting. Our online teachers, mentors, and counselors provide unparalleled guidance and assistance to students throughout their coursework.
Please note that although BU offers flexibility, we have similar expectations as other BVSD schools around attendance, academic progress, behavior, and activities.

For students interested in a spot at Boulder Universal (BU) for the CURRENT school year:

Administrative Transfers

BVSD Board Policy allows for parents/guardians to request a mid-year transfer between schools called Administrative Transfers (AT). These requests are only allowed between September 15 and April 15. Administrative Transfers are only a request and a multitude of factors determine acceptance, including space availability, course compatibility, and evidence of online success.

In order to request a transfer, please review all of the information on the BVSD Administrative Transfer (AT) Website and click on the "Administrative Transfer Form" button. Be sure to complete this AT form by the deadlines listed below and provide as much information as possible when completing the form.

Notes About Administrative Transfers (AT) Into BU:

When submitting the Administrative Transfer (AT) form, the request goes to the Administration at both the sending and receiving schools to be reviewed. Once a decision is made, the enrollment office will notify the family by email.
- If AT request is approved, the transfer will occur immediately or at the next quarter (dates listed below), depending on situation
- Once enrollment has been confirmed, Boulder Universal will contact you to schedule a welcome meeting with our staff.
BU is on a semester system so students' courses may not align with their schedule from the previous school. It is up to the student and family to understand what impact this may have on a student's credits/schedule.
Students are expected to enroll as full time students at BU. No partial enrollments will be approved at this time.
- Elementary students at BU (grades K-5) will be enrolled in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies
- Secondary students at BU (grades 6-12) will be enrolled in a minimum of five courses.

Choice Enrollment Process

This process is designed to allow students to choose to attend another BVSD school for the next school year.

Applications submitted during the first enrollment window will be given priority in the process.

Historically, we’ve been able to take all K-11th graders with an on-time application. We do get a disproportionate number of 12th grade applicants and are able to take many but generally not all.

Post Lottery Enrollment Process

A late Choice Enrollment request (January 9 - August 31, 2026) is still possible to submit. However, these seats are given out only on space availability; therefore, the chances of getting a seat are reduced. Late requests are put on a waitlist in the order received. Note, BU will NOT take any student off the waitlist after August 8 to ensure all students accepted through OE start on the first day of school.
