BVSD Counseling Vision Statement

Our goal is to optimize school success for all students in the academic, career, and personal-social domains. Therefore, a counselor’s role is:

• To provide curriculum in the areas of academic success, career development, and life skills
• To teach, promote, and model the New Century Graduate skills
• To advocate for ALL students
• To promote district and school goals such as achievement, cultural diversity, equity and school safety
• To guide all students through their Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP)

ELEMENTARY Counseling

A comprehensive elementary school counselor provides education, prevention and intervention services in the areas of academic, career and social/emotional development supports.

It is important to note that elementary counselors are not therapists; rather they are professional educators with a mental health perspective. They typically spend the majority of their time working on universal instruction and working with all students. The elementary counselors will work in collaboration with administration, teachers, the mental health team and parents to determine the needs of all students within each building.

Middle School Counseling

School counselors who work at the middle school level help the students in a variety of ways:

• Identification of Interests and Academic Aptitudes 
• Goal Setting, Course Selections, and Academic Achievement  
• Academic Interventions / Response to Intervention
• Development of Social Skills  / Resistance of Peer Pressure
• Development of Decision Making and Problem Solving Skills
• Transitioning Successfully to High School

High School Counseling

High school counselors spend a lot of their time helping students make sure their course selections are aligned with their postsecondary goals. In particular, counselors assist students in researching post-graduation opportunities such as college or professional training. When students apply to colleges, they often seek guidance from their counselors on the college application process. Counselors also continue the work with students on their social and emotional development, study skills, decision making, problem solving, and resiliency.
